Study of sustainability aspects of integrating sanitary landfill in development of Eco-park
A Case at Nilbarahi, Madhyapur Thimi

Abstract

Along with rapid urbanization and population growth, the volume of waste generation in Nepal increases. In case of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality, 81% of the total waste generated was biodegradable waste. Municipal waste is currently being disposed in sisdol landfill site in Okharpauwa. Back in 2005, the Kathmandu Government had made a commitment to use the Sisdole landfill site for three years only, but the landfill site continues to be used 13 years later.
The waste problem has become chronic, and it’s taking a huge toll on the locals there. So, time and again locals come down to protests thus garbage collection came to a halt leading to waste dumps in the cities making it difficult for people to breathe or take a walk outside (Ojha, 2019) . For healthy life, clean environment and sustainable development proper waste management is a crucial aspect that should be addressed properly.
So, learning from these ongoing situations, the Madhyapur Thimi municipality has envisioned a project where the waste generated within its boundary will be managed in a sustainable way within its own territory. Commonly seen Landfills done for waste management create serious environmental problems and are a common target for citizen activism such as environmental justice and Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) protests (Lawson, 2015). To overcome these problems, an envisioned waste management program will be done by using sanitary method of landfill i.e Fukuoka method which is semi-aerobic type. The project has envisioned the proper management of biodegradable solid waste of the municipality in the natural low land in the site, Nilbarahi forest area by using Fukuoka method. Nilbarahi forest area spread in 500 rapines land has 10 natural pit like low land structure so very less part of the forest is accessible for people to use. The method is analysed in this thesis thesis and its feasibility for Madhyapur Thimi Municipality appraised in terms of user acceptant, environmental benefits and challenges and economic job creation. Recommendations are given for policy makers and planners.
