Abstract

Nepal is one of the fastest urbanizing countries, globally. Urbanization is dominated by a few large and medium cities with an excessive population concentration in the Kathmandu Valley. Nepal and India share economy and trade relationship. Trucks carrying cargo have to travel a route of 159.66 km, while difficult street conditions and mountainous geography are huge obstacles. This creates a need for highway development connecting Kathmandu to Terai, Kathmandu-Terai/Madhes Fast Track Project (KTFTP) . The highway development is supposed to bring economic prosperous to our country. Having said that, it is also necessary to have sustainable development. Highway development comes with both positive and negative impacts. It sure makes a major contribution to Nepal’s National GDP but has also serious effects on forest, wildlife, agricultural land. This thesis investigates the impact of the KTFTP on Sano Khokana. Khokana is rich in cultural identity. This fast-track project has major impacts on cultural values, and agricultural land conversion. For that reason, local residents objecting to this project. An Environmental Impact Analysis for the Project is conducted in the thesis. Yet, EIA say little about this particular impacts. It was found that the project also lacks public consultation, and communication between government and the people. The thesis suggests thus conclusively a methodological framework to meet this challenges. The framework is based on literature studies and the derivation of parameter for stakeholder collaboration from the analysis of these studies.
