This thesis aims to foster community-based approaches for regenerating the urban riverfront along the Bagmati River in the Kathmandu Valley. The study focuses on land utilization and spatial planning, regular activities encompassing leisure and religious practices, and community-led regeneration projects, including cleaning campaigns. Through an in-depth analysis of the chosen river section and its surrounding corridor, the research identifies methods to promote sustainable development and understand the significance of river corridors and associated activities. The study formulates recommendations to enhance the river and its corridor, contributing to inclusive and community-driven initiatives for urban riverfront regeneration. The research questions explore the shortcomings in land use, requirements for leisure activities, impacts of river degradation on religious rituals, and challenges in community-led regeneration projects. The study employs a qualitative research methodology, including observations and semi-structured interviews, and utilizes primary and secondary sources of information. The thesis findings highlight the need for improved land utilization and spatial planning along the Bagmati River. It emphasizes the importance of integrating recreational spaces, cultural amenities, and ecological considerations for vibrant and sustainable riverfront environments. The study also underscores the significance of regular activities and community-led regeneration projects, such as cleaning campaigns, in enhancing the river's condition and fostering community connections. Inclusive and community-driven initiatives are crucial for successful urban riverfront regeneration and improving the quality of life for surrounding communities. Findings can inform urban planners, policymakers, and community stakeholders in developing inclusive and community-driven riverfront regeneration initiatives that improve the quality of life for the surrounding communities.
